In His Eyes, Nothing Is Too Small

Daily Reflection – 10/27/26

Sacred Scripture

Jesus said, “What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that a person took and planted in the garden. When it was fully grown, it became a large bush and the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches.”

Again, he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened.” (Luke 13:18-21)

Reflection

There is something wonderfully reassuring about the pictures Jesus gives us today. A mustard seed. A little yeast. Neither seems important enough to carry the Kingdom of God. And perhaps that is precisely His point.

We are accustomed to noticing what is large, successful and visible. We measure progress by what we can see. We want evidence that our prayers are being answered, that our lives are making a difference, that God is actually doing something.

But Jesus points toward things that almost disappear.

The seed is placed into the ground and covered with dirt. The yeast is worked into the flour until it can no longer be seen. And then comes the hardest part: waiting.

Nothing appears to be happening.

Yet beneath the soil, life has already begun. Within the dough, transformation is already taking place.

Perhaps there are seasons in our lives when God seems absent simply because His work is still hidden.

We pray for someone we love and see no change. We offer kindness that appears unnoticed. We forgive someone who never understands what that forgiveness cost us. We try again after failing. We choose patience when anger would be easier. We carry someone’s burden quietly. None of these things looks particularly remarkable.

But neither does a mustard seed.

Sometimes we underestimate the sacred power of small things because we cannot see where they will lead.

Jesus reminds us that the Kingdom seldom arrives with noise. Often it begins within one human heart. A little more compassion. A little less judgment. The decision to forgive. The courage to speak gently. The willingness to sit beside someone who is hurting rather than trying to fix them. These may seem like small choices, but God has never been afraid to begin small.

And perhaps there is another invitation hidden here.

We do not have to change the whole world.

That burden was never ours.

We are simply asked to let God change the small piece of the world that passes through our hands today.

The mustard seed eventually becomes a place where birds can rest. What began almost invisibly becomes shelter for another life. What if our faith is meant to become that too? What if the deepest evidence of God’s Kingdom growing within us is that someone else finds a little more shelter, hope, dignity or peace because we were there?

We may never know the reach of a kindness offered at the right moment. We may never see what grows from a word of encouragement, a quiet prayer, an act of mercy, or simply refusing to return hurt for hurt.

Maybe we aren’t supposed to see all of it.

The seed does not need to understand the tree it will become.

It simply needs to be planted.

And perhaps today God is asking us to trust the holy work we cannot yet see. Something may already be growing beneath the surface of our lives. Something may already be rising in a heart we have prayed for. Something we said or did years ago may still be bearing fruit somewhere beyond our sight.

The Kingdom of God begins small.

But in the hands of God, small has never meant insignificant.

Prayer of The Day

“Lord, teach me to trust the quiet ways You work. When I cannot see growth, help me believe that You are still present beneath the surface. Plant Your Kingdom deeply within me, and let even the smallest acts of my life become places of kindness, hope and shelter for others. Amen.”

Daily Note

Never mistake what is hidden for what is absent. God may already be growing something beautiful where you cannot yet see it.
