The Power of Small Beginnings

Daily Reflection – 7/27/2026

Sacred Scripture

Another parable he put before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.” All this Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. 36 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.” (Matthew 13: 31-35)

Reflection

There’s something about the smallest things — the mustard seed, the leaven — that keeps coming back to remind us how God works. Not through spectacle, not through noise, but through quiet beginnings that grow into something unmistakable.

In the text, Jesus describes the mustard seed as “the smallest of all seeds,” yet it becomes a tree large enough that “the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” And He says the kingdom is like leaven — hidden, unseen — yet it transforms everything it touches.

That’s the part that hits me today. The kingdom doesn’t arrive fully formed. It grows in us. It changes us. And in that change, it changes the world around us.

One person rooted in God’s word can shift the atmosphere of a home, a workplace, a neighborhood. Not through speeches. Not through arguments. But through the quiet witness of a life lived differently.

When someone sees a person whose values aren’t dictated by the moment, whose hope isn’t tied to what’s visible, whose peace doesn’t rise and fall with the news cycle — it stirs questions.

Why do they live like that? What anchors them? What inspires them?

That’s evangelization. Not the loud kind. The lived kind.

Lately I’ve found myself using a new identity — not political, not ideological, not tied to any camp. When people ask where I stand, I simply say: “I’m a Matthew 25 Christian.”

Because if we take on those values — compassion, mercy, service, humility — our faith doesn’t just grow. We grow. And in that growth, others find shelter in the branches of our lives.

At the end, when all the labels fall away and all the noise is gone, I want to be able to stand before God and say: “I did my best to live Your word.”

Prayer of The Day

“Father, steady my heart. Shape me from the inside out. Let Your Spirit work in me the quiet transformation that becomes a witness to others. Make my life a place where Your kingdom grows — small at first, unseen at first, but unmistakable in time.”

Daily Note

The mustard seed becomes a tree. The leaven transforms the dough. God’s work often begins in places too small to notice — but once it takes root, it changes everything. As the document says: “It starts from the smallest beginnings in the hearts of men and women who are receptive to God’s word.”

And that’s the invitation today: Let the small beginning happen. Let the quiet work start. Let God grow something in you that becomes shelter for others,
