Pruning Away Those Distractions

Daily Reflection – 6/14/2024

Sacred Scripture

Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna. It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce. But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”(Matthew 5:27-32)

Reflection

In the Gospels, Jesus often used powerful and vivid imagery to drive home his teachings. One such moment is found in Matthew 5:27-32, where Jesus speaks about gouging out an eye or cutting off a hand if it causes us to sin. This metaphorical language can be perplexing, but its meaning is profound and essential for Christians seeking to live a life of integrity and holiness.

When Jesus says, “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away,” he is not advocating self-mutilation. Instead, he is emphasizing the importance of removing anything from our lives that leads us into sin. This could be a habit, a relationship, or even an environment that tempts us away from God’s will.

Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount are a call to radical discipleship. He sets a high standard for his followers, urging them to pursue righteousness that exceeds the superficial piety of the Pharisees. Jesus is not exaggerating; he is using forceful language to highlight the gravity of sin and the importance of living a life aligned with God’s desires.

The ultimate goal Jesus presents is an enduring life of joy and happiness with God. This life is characterized by love, peace, joy, and a deep relationship with the Creator. To achieve this, we must be willing to part with anything that hinders our spiritual growth, much like a doctor removing a diseased limb to save a patient’s life.

There are some practical steps we can take to overcome sin:

Identify and Remove Temptations: Reflect on aspects of your life that may lead you into sin. It could be certain behaviors like adultery, drunkenness, gambling, or idolatry. These may seem enjoyable at the moment but ultimately lead to spiritual death.

Engage with Scripture: Reading the Bible is a powerful way to align your heart and mind with God’s will. Passages such as Matthew 26–28 or Psalm 139 can remind you of Jesus’ sacrifice and your worth in God’s eyes.

Prayer and Reflection: Spend quiet moments in prayer, asking God to reveal the depth of his love for you. Seek his guidance and strength to resist temptation.

Seek God’s Grace: Remember that God desires your holiness and is always ready to help. When facing temptation, cry out to the Holy Spirit for grace and self-control. If you fall, do not despair—God’s mercy is boundless, and he is always ready to forgive.

Stay Connected to Fellow Christians: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can offer support, encouragement, and accountability. Being part of a faith community helps you stay grounded and focused on your spiritual goals.

Holiness is not just about avoiding sin; it’s about nurturing a relationship with God and reflecting his character in our lives. It is a treasure we carry within ourselves, a constant reminder of our identity as children of God.

During moments of weakness, remember that God is always ready to extend his mercy and forgiveness. No matter how many times we fall, he is there to lift us up and set us back on the path of righteousness. The spiritual life is a journey, and along the way, we may stumble. But each time we rise, we are reminded of the “great exchange” that Martin Luther spoke of—”You give God your sin, and He gives you His Son on the Cross.”

Prayer of The Day

Lord Jesus, help us to identify the negative distractions in our lives that can make us lose the Kingdom of God. Help us to shun them and give us the strength to avoid falling back into their tempting invitations. Jesus, we love you.”

Daily Note

Jesus teaches that righteousness involves responding to every situation in life in a way that fulfills God’s law, not just externally but internally as well.  He knows that evil desires spring from the heart. He also knows that lust and adultery lead to even more grievous sin. That is why he discusses that the sin of adultery must first be dealt with in the heart, the place not only of the emotions, but the mind, will, thought, and intentions as well.
