Sacred Scripture
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:17-19)
Reflection
There is only one path for the followers of Christ. The path is not merely a direction; it’s a way of life that echoes with footsteps of love, mercy, and sanctity. If we truly love God, if we really set our gaze firmly upon Christ, it is on this path we find ourselves walking—conforming our lives to His example.
Today’s Gospel gives us insight on what it truly means to live a Christian life. Jesus imparts to us an all-encompassing word—”fulfill.” This word transcends the mere observance of the law, urging us to embody a new moral code built upon divinely ordained love.
Jesus puts forth a clear edict for his disciples: to love one another as He has loved us. That love becomes a defining mark of discipleship. It prompts us to go beyond the constraints of the law as it stood, to replace it with the generous, sacrificial love that characterizes Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. To fulfill this command of love is thus to fulfill the law in its deepest essence.
But what does this mean in practical terms? How do we manifest this divine love in the secular world we inhabit? How we answer these questions delineates the Christian from the worldly. Do we adhere to God’s commandments as dutiful obligations? Or do we integrate them into the fabric of our lives, letting them shape our every action and attitude?
Loving God truly and fixing our eyes on Christ compels us to align our existence with His—a transformation that, in turn, naturally distances us from worldly ways. It’s a process that doesn’t unfold overnight or through a solitary event. It is an intentional pursuit—an ongoing pilgrimage marked by steadfastness and continual conversion.
This transformative journey is punctuated by moments of struggle and resilience. Yet it is a divine summons to each one of us—a call which, once embraced, strengthens our resolve to traverse the rough patches with grace.
We strive to be more in His likeness—to grow into the image of who our Redeemer calls us to be. It’s about an invitation to intimacy with the Lord, a call to obedience that is driven not by compulsion but by a genuine yearning to emulate Jesus’ example and to champion His message to every corner of the earth.
God beckons each one of us, not only to abide by His commandments but to inspire others towards the path of true discipleship. To do so earnestly is to aspire for nothing less than greatness in His everlasting kingdom.
The Christian landscape is vast and varied, yet the true north is clear – – following the trail blazed by Jesus, fueled by love, and guided by the light of His life and teachings. I invite you to take that step today with me, to choose the right path. Embark on this sacred voyage as we together seek to draw nearer to our Lord, carrying the torch of His commandments, and reflecting His love in the world that so desperately needs it.
Prayer of The Day
“Lord Jesus, grant us this day, the ability to adjust our thoughts, words and deeds so that they are in accord with your Father’s law of love and may we be saved and protected through your mighty help.”
Daily Note
On the tomb of Michael Ramsey in Canterbury Cathedral is an inscription taken from one of the early fathers of the Church, St. Irenaeus: “The glory of God is a living man and the life of man is the vision of God.”
