Daily Reflection – 11/25/2025
Sacred Scripture
He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury; and he saw a poor widow put in two copper coins. And he said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all the living that she had.” (Luke 21:1-4)
Reflection
After finishing his formal teaching in the Temple courtyard, Jesus paused to observe the people around him. Among the crowd, he noticed a striking contrast: wealthy individuals making a show of their large contributions and a poor widow quietly offering two small coins. Her gift, though seemingly insignificant, caught Jesus’ attention and became a timeless lesson for his disciples—and for us.
The widow’s offering was not remarkable because of its monetary value but because of the depth of her sacrifice. While the wealthy gave out of their abundance, she gave out of her poverty, offering everything she had to live on. Her act of giving was a profound expression of trust in God’s providence and a reflection of her deep faith. She believed that God would care for her, even when she gave all she had.
This story challenges us to examine our own hearts. Are we giving God our surplus—what’s left over after we’ve taken care of ourselves—or are we offering him our first and best? True generosity is not measured by the size of the gift but by the spirit of sacrifice and love behind it. The widow’s two small coins, given in love, carried more weight in God’s eyes than the large sums of the wealthy.
Her example also reminds us of the importance of trust. She entrusted her entire livelihood to God, confident in his care. This kind of trust is not easy—it requires us to let go of our need for control and to place our lives fully in God’s hands. Yet, it is this trust that allows us to live with freedom and joy, knowing that we are cared for by a loving Father.
The widow’s act of giving speaks to the transformative power of love. Her small gift, given with a heart full of love, became a powerful testimony of faith. In the same way, our small acts of love, whether a kind word, a helping hand, or a moment of prayer—can have a profound impact when offered with sincerity and selflessness.
Prayer of The Day
“Lord Jesus, your love knows no bounds and you give without measure. All that I have comes from you. May I give freely and generously in gratitude for all that you have given to me. Take my life and all that I possess – my gifts, talents, time and resources – and use them as you see fit for your glory.””
Daily Note
Jesus taught that real giving must come from the heart. A gift that is given with a grudge or for display loses its value. But a gift given out of love, with a spirit of generosity and sacrifice, is precious. The amount or size of the gift doesn’t matter as much as the cost to the giver. Jesus praised someone who gave barely a penny – how insignificant a sum – because it was everything she had, her whole living.
