Daily Reflection – 5/15/19

Sacred Scripture

Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me, and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me. I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness. And if anyone hears my words and does not observe them, I do not condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save the world. Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words has something to judge him: the word that I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day, because I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So what I say, I say as the Father told me.”( John 12:44-50)

 Reflection

One line stands out in this passage: “I, came into the world as light so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness.”.” Jesus says exactly who he is and why He has come.

He is much more than a prophet, much more than a political Messiah, much more than anyone ever imagined a man could be: He is the very light of the world.

He is the center, the focus, apex, fulcrum…. all the superlatives you want to use rolled up into one! And he is right. There is no one in all history who causes people such problems as Jesus. There is no one in all history who promises us so much as Jesus. He speaks across the ages; he calls us every day of our lives. And each day the question is the same: Are you following me? Are you living the Word? Are your actions consistent with all that I taught, all that I brought from my Father? Do you understand that when the Word became flesh, it was done for you? . . . to save you . . . to bring you the promise of eternal life . . . to bring you the promise of union with my Father?

What is that worth? When all is said and done, wouldn’t we want to be in the light with the promise of a bright eternity? Each of us has walked through our own valley of darkness – sometimes more than once. Each of us has survived that walk because we have carried His light in our hearts . . . because we have carried His presence in our lives.

So many things in our lives are directly affected by him…. our moral choices, our prejudices, our hopes. There is no part of our life where Jesus does not have something to say and some light to shine on it. The problem is we keep trying to look at other lights and miss the glorious one sitting in front of our eyes. How foolish we can be.

 Prayer of The Day

We are created in light to bring light to the world. Let us never doubt the Creator’s strength and wisdom, and let us call on God for help when we feel the darkness too close around us.

We are made in God’s own image as sisters and brothers of Christ. Let us always rely on Jesus’ love and compassion when we are overcome by the worries of the world.

We are made in love to bring love to the world. Let us forever depend on the healing presence of the Spirit when we are wounded or betrayed.

May Jesus Christ be always our way, our truth, our life and our light.  Amen.

Daily Note

God is always ready to give His light, wisdom and truth, to all who seek Him and hunger for His word. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, he helps us to grow each and every day in faith, knowledge and understanding of his life-giving Word. We need to decide whether we want to know more of God and to grow in His transforming love.
